Speaker Note: Here, we use ssodajida (to pour) instead of just oda (to come). It paints a picture of heavy rain. The ending -gi sijakhaesseoyo means "started to X". It's a very common pattern for storytelling!

Translation & Notes

Grammar Alert: -aseo/eoseo (because/so). "Because I had no umbrella (eopseoseo), I ran..."
Also, Koreans love convenience stores (Pyeonuijeom)! It's the default shelter in the city.

Scene 2: Entering the Shop

Jingle sound (bell) 종소리가 났어요. Gage muneul yeolja ddallang jongsoriga nasseoyo.
Translation & Notes
"As soon as I opened the shop door, the bell jingled."
Sound Word: Ddallang is the sound a small bell makes. Korean is full of these sound words (onomatopoeia). Also, the grammar -ja attached to the verb (yeolja) means "as soon as X happened".
"어서 오세요! 비가 많이 오죠?" "Eoseo oseyo! Biga mani ojyo?"
Translation & Notes
"Welcome! It's raining a lot, isn't it?"
Cultural Note: Eoseo oseyo is the standard greeting whenever you enter a business. The shopkeeper adds -jyo? at the end. This is short for -ji yo?, seeking agreement. It's like saying "Right?" or "Isn't it?" It makes the conversation friendly immediately.

Scene 3: Choosing a Color

Ordering food/items: Noun + (number) + juseyo. Transparent umbrellas are very popular in Korea because they let you see where you are walking on crowded, rainy streets!
아저씨는 웃으며 새 우산을 건네주셨어요. Ajeossineun useumyeo sae usaneul geonnejusyeosseoyo.
Translation & Notes
"The older gentleman (shopkeeper) smiled and handed me a new umbrella."
Respect: Notice the word -jusyeosseoyo. The -si- inside indicates respect for the older shopkeeper. If it were a friend, we would just say jueosseoyo.
